Ask someone to define hip-hop and they might say rap. Someone more in-the-know might talk about DJs, too. Now go ask Benson Lee, the director of “Planet B-Boy,” a documentary on the forgotten breakdancing subculture of hip-hop, and he’ll make a strong case for the acrobatic urban dancers.

Lee’s film, “Planet B-Boy,” chronicles the journey of five breakdancing crews from around the world in pursuit of the Battle of the Year title, an annual international event held in Germany for the crown of world B-boy champion.

It’s the Super Bowl for breakdancers.

B-boy is the original term for a breakdancer.

Lee’s documentary explains this as it delves into the history of hip-hop and how it relates to breakdancing.

The film is at its most compelling when it tells the stories of the dancers.

Some of the most memorable are a Korean boy’s yearning for his father’s approval, and a young French boy dealing with his mother’s racism.

Many B-boys profiled come from impoverished nations and the message of pursuing dreams without any financial security has a powerful resonance.

The film’s weakest point is it assumes the average moviegoer has a general understanding of the culture of B-boys, hip-hop and breakdancing.

This exclusiveness isn’t prevalent throughout and Lee combats it by telling the stories through his subjects.

The spirit of B-boying is captured well in the film. The footage of the dancers is unparalleled. In a subculture that relies so heavily on amateurs to film it, “Planet B-Boy’s” shots are nothing short of spectacular.

B-boys often use the civilian world as their dance floor, and spin on their heads in subways, parks, and crowded city blocks. “Planet B-Boy” has shots of all of these, from B-boys dancing on crowded subway platforms and doing backflips in crowded Japanese cities.

The experience is enhanced when you see the reaction of bystanders who don’t know whether to be impressed or look away.

The prominent commentary roles B-boy legends like Ken Swift play in the film are a testament to its credibility and appeal. Swift is considered to be one of the pioneers of B-boying.

So much work and not enough time in the day. Life is a beautiful struggle no matter what. We are in the lab working hard to bring you all some of the illest stuff, events, etc... for the spring and summer. I really need a vacation on the real.
